Neglecting larval rearing conditions in Drosophila melanogaster can negatively impact research on ageing

چکیده
The developmental conditions of Drosophila melanogaster flies can modify the phenotypic traits adults. However, control these is neglected by some authors in their articles and readers are unaware, for instance, whether developed crowded cultures or fed on a new used medium. Controlling allows to know precisely viability flies, duration development sex-ratio, which be warning signals bad rearing conditions. As results experiments effects ageing it necessary strictly them.

Larval rearing environment affects several post-copulatory traits in Drosophila melanogaster.
In Drosophila melanogaster, accessory gland proteins (Acps) that a male transfers during mating affect his reproductive success by altering the female's behaviour and physiology. To test the role of male condition in the expression of Acps, we manipulated the pre-adult environment and examined adult males for relative transcript abundance of nine Acps, and for post-copulatory traits that Acps i...
متن کاملDissection of larval CNS in Drosophila melanogaster.
The central nervous system (CNS) of Drosophila larvae is complex and poorly understood. One way to investigate the CNS is to use immunohistochemistry to examine the expression of various novel and marker proteins. Staining of whole larvae is impractical because the tough cuticle prevents antibodies from penetrating inside the body cavity. In order to stain these tissues it is necessary to disse...
متن کاملMagnetic compass orientation by larval Drosophila melanogaster.
We report evidence for magnetic compass orientation by larval Drosophila melanogaster. Groups of larvae were exposed from the time of hatching to directional ultraviolet (365nm) light emanating from one of four magnetic directions. Larvae were then tested individually on a circular agar plate under diffuse light in one of four magnetic field alignments. The larvae exhibited magnetic compass ori...
متن کاملImpact of rearing conditions and short-term light exposure on signaling performance in Drosophila photoreceptors.
The amount of visual information an animal can extract from its environment is ultimately limited by the signaling performance of its photoreceptors. To maximize their performance, photoreceptors must be able to accommodate large changes in input caused by the dynamic properties of the visual environment and the animal's own behavior. This is likely to require a range of adaptation mechanisms o...
متن کاملSleep deprivation negatively impacts reproductive output in Drosophila melanogaster.
Most animals sleep or exhibit a sleep-like state, yet the adaptive significance of this phenomenon remains unclear. Although reproductive deficits are associated with lifestyle-induced sleep deficiencies, how sleep loss affects reproductive physiology is poorly understood, even in model organisms. We aimed to bridge this mechanistic gap by impairing sleep in female fruit flies and testing its e...
